Lotus Education & Arts Foundation in Bloomington, Indiana, presented Amjad Ali Khan and Family in July 2010. This Performing Arts Fund—supported engagement was the organization’s 2010 “Summer Nights of Lotus” concert and included a public performance by Amjad Ali Khan and Family, featuring Indian ragas (from both Muslim and Hindu traditions) and Amjad’s original compositions, which are all built on masterful “conversations” on sarod between father and son and complemented by the rhythms of the tabla. Later in the performance, they were joined by Carrie Newcomer, with whom they have been working with to create a cross-cultural musical collaboration for an upcoming CD. For many in attendance, this was the most exhilarating part of the night, to experience the interweaving of guitar with sarod and the haunting echoes of quwwali singing complementing Newcomer’s clear voice.
