Arts Midwest is thrilled to announce a new program in China featuring Dessa—a singer, creative entrepreneur, and thought leader from Minneapolis!
This Arts Midwest Global Exchange will bring Dessa to Beijing, Chengdu, and Guangzhou from May 15–31, 2018. During her tour, Dessa will visit classrooms, community centers, and theaters to share her music and discuss life and culture in the United States. Her ensemble will include long-time collaborator Aby Wolf and Grammy-nominated Matthew Santos.
“International travel has been a formative factor in my life,” says Dessa. “It’s helped relieve me of some small ideas, reconsider my impressions of my own culture, and connect more honestly with other people. Real cultural exchange fosters empathy, patience, and a healthy skepticism of absolutists.”
The program builds on decades of international programming at Arts Midwest designed to foster understanding and appreciation across cultures. Arts Midwest Global Exchanges create moments of surprise, curiosity, and connection through hands-on activities with Midwestern artists.
“Arts Midwest is beyond excited to work with Dessa on this global exchange,” says David J. Fraher, president & CEO of Arts Midwest. “Her extraordinary music, intelligent and personal lyrics, and dynamic presence will inspire audiences throughout China and encourage a new perspective on Minneapolis and the Midwest.”
Dessa is an artistic innovator whose musical performances are ambitious, inventive, and designed to defy audience expectations. Recognized as a creative entrepreneur, Dessa helped build an artistic enterprise that produces and promotes music, curates events, and pursues unique business ventures. She has written two literary collections; her first hardcover book, My Own Devices, will be published in fall 2018 by Dutton Books. She released her fourth studio album, Chime, to critical acclaim in February 2018.
