Photographer Abdi Roble will be in Minneapolis this Tuesday, October 21, 2008 for the release of his new book The Somali Diaspora: A Journey Away, published by the University of Minnesota Press. The book’s powerful black and white photographs and compelling essays document the journey of families from the Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, to new lives in the United States.
Also on view at the University’s Elmer L. Andersen Library is the exhibition As I See It: Images from the Lives of Twin Cities Youth, featuring documentary photographs taken by Ubah Medical Academy students under the direction of Abdi Roble and writer Doug Rutledge, video interviews, and immigrant stories from local youth.
Abdi’s exhibition Stories of the Somali Diaspora features many of the photographs from the book, and will tour in 2009.
