Arts Midwest just launched a tour of renowned Chinese dance company, Jin Xing Dance Theatre Shanghai. For the next four weeks, the company will conduct educational workshops, master classes, and performances in six U.S. cities, including Minneapolis.
Jin Xing Dance Theatre Shanghai invokes an unexpected fusion of western and traditional Chinese culture and draws on the vision and expertise of celebrated founder and dancer, Jin Xing. The first Chinese dancer to win a grant in New York from the Asian Cultural Council, Jin Xing has studied with Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Jose Limon, among others. Her resulting artistic and personal journeys have been filled with acclaim, perseverance, and outstanding skill. The company is performing Shanghai Tango, an overview of Jin Xing’s artistic work from the last 25 years, on the U.S. tour.
The 2012 tour is part of a unique partnership between Arts Midwest, 20 presenting organizations from large American universities, and the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. The partnership is committed to increasing the capacity of U.S. presenting organizations to curate and tour this important work, and to providing opportunities for American students to engage with Chinese artists and cultural leaders.
